The Bay County Water Treatment Plant this has received the 2018 North American Water Historic Landmark Award at the National American Water Works Association (AWWA) Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV on June 13.

The award recognizes water treatment facilities older than 50 years that have historical significance and continuously meet or exceed regulatory and compliance benchmarks.

“This award validates the hard work that our men and women at Bay County Utilities do each day to ensure that exceptional drinking water is available to our residents and visitors,” said Bay County Commissioner Tommy Hamm, who traveled to Las Vegas to accept the award Wednesday evening. “I am so proud of their efforts and am grateful to have had the opportunity to represent Bay County.”

Only a select few facilities receive the North American Water Historic Landmark Award each year, Bay County Utilities Director Ben Blitch said. This year, Bay County and three other locales were awarded.

“There are a lot of criteria that go into winning this award,” Blitch said, noting that managing older facilities can be very difficult, particularly when it comes to treating surface water like that from Deer Point Reservoir. He said the quality of the raw water coming into the plant is not always consistent, requiring constant adjustment of the water treatment process by the facility’s operators.

Bay County Utilities regularly wins state and national awards, Blitch said, attributable to the dedication of the employees.

“All of our staff takes extreme pride in winning these awards,” he said, “and there’s a very small list of people who can say they win them as consistently as we do. The citizens of Bay County can know that they’re getting the highest quality of drinking water they can get.”

In December 2017, the Bay County Water Treatment Plant received the Florida Water Historic Landmark Award from the Florida Section of the AWWA.
